I think it depends on the individual and what is best for them. Some people are more effective as parents when they are working outside the home while others prefer to be home the majority of the time.

There's the financial aspect as well. My grandmother stayed home and had 12 children. While they were not well off I know my father had fond memories of their time spent together.
