A new year is coming up. As I wait in traffic and checkout lines while Christmas shopping, I can't help but think of what my new year's resolutions should be.
Despite all the new material I've read, heard and researched about parenting - and the fluid dynamics of an ever-changing family - my resolutions seem to be the same old thing every year: Be more organized, exercise more, keep better track of the kids' schoolwork, make it to the end of January without yelling . . .
Either I'm failing to reach any of my goals, or I'm setting the bar higher every year.
This year is as good a time as any to throw out the old and bring in the new.
I'm making all new resolutions for 2008.
1. Spend more time as a family outdoors. Green Hour, a National Wildlife Federation effort to connect children with nature, says spending at least one hour outdoors daily will make us happier and healthier.
2. Slow down and simplify. Stop and take a deep breath and think about what I'm doing more often. Get back to basics, and create more down-to-earth traditions for my family.
3. Be more organized. (Sorry, I can't help it!)
