Where should kids study and do homework?

Well, it’s official.

You’re going to have to buy a La-Z-Boy chair for each of your children.

According to an article in yesterday’s paper from McClatchy Newspapers, the experts are saying students study best when they’re comfortable.

But not too comfortable.

College students who study and do homework on their beds fall asleep all too often. But the old adage that being a little bit uncomfortable keeps the mind sharp has been tossed out as rubbish. Experts now say sitting in a straight-backed desk chair isn’t conducive to learning.

As our children head back to school, we have to start looking around the house for the best homework environment. Homework? Remember homework? (Yes, I know, it’s been a long, beautiful summer!)

My kids have done homework at the kitchen table while I cook dinner, in their rooms with the door shut and headphones on, lying on their beds, at the computer at the desk in the study, on the back porch, and in the library.

I must admit I hadn’t given much thought to their comfort while doing homework. I was more worried about their ability to concentrate, keeping food and drinks from spilling onto their books, and not distracting or annoying one another.

Being comfortable might keep them at the books a little longer and it may seem less like work.

If you’re getting ready to send your children back to school, set up the perfect homework and study center for your children. Even if it’s only the same old dining room table with cushions on the chairs, show your kids that you want them to get the most out of their study time.
