Is it October 31 Already?

Halloween Merchandise in August is No Trick

Ready or not, Halloween is right around the corner.

I was shopping at WalMart today and couldn’t believe my eyes.

They were putting out Halloween costumes and decorations. The school supplies that had briefly held court there were already a fading memory.

Note the date on this blog – August 28.

Is it possible that we’re getting even earlier with our seasonal preparations?

I know Halloween sneaks up on us. Right after the back-to-school frenzy, when we’ve filled out the forms, paid for workbooks, met the teachers at open house, it’s time to start browsing for costumes.

But I didn’t think the orange and black blitz began as early as August.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. We’ve had big Halloween parties, miles of trick-or-treating, school costume parades, haunted houses in our basement . . . and I’ve enjoyed them all.

I love the photographs of my kids dressed up. All my children wore our ghost costume as an infant, and the bee costume as a toddler.

During my more crafty years, I made costumes, including a beautiful bluebird costume for my son in preschool and a furry squirrel costume, so authentic that my 2-year-old was afraid of it. (We left it lying around the house for weeks, so he could get used to it, before he would wear it.)

This year, plan to do something different. Check out the article on Six Alternatives to Trick-or-Treat.

Have a frugal fright night by having a Halloween Costume Exchange. You can save yourself some money on costumes, get rid of some of the old ones, and kick off the Halloween season early.

Better hurry – it’s almost September!
