Celebrate a Happy New Year with a party that's fun for adults and kids alike.
Ring in a Happy New Year as a family this year, with a fun, festive party for all ages.
New Year's Eve is a great time to reminisce over the past year and set some resolutions for the future.
Gather the whole family together for a dinner of finger foods and appetizers and then have each family member share their favorite memory of the past year, and a resolution for the upcoming year.
Start some new family traditions with some New Year's activities for kids.
Make a table runner or table cloth out of plain white fabric. Using fabric markers, write a memory from the year “Brian made the soccer team September 2007” “Kara had a dance recital May 2007” and other highlights from the year. Leave room so that each year you can add some memories. Use it every New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Write out some trivia questions ahead of time and lead a trivia contest to see who can remember the most about the previous year. You can make trivia questions about your family (“What did Dad order at his birthday lunch?” “Who sat in front of us at the spring concert?”), the news (“What famous actress had a baby and named her Suri?” “Who won the Super Bowl?”) or a combination of both. Use photographs for some of your questions (“Where was Kelly when this photo was taken of her?”)
Kids love pulling together items to put into a homemade time capsule. Include a family picture taken this year, ticket stubs, souvenirs and other mementos, a copy of the newspaper, a magazine or two, along with a message from each member of the family. Put everything into a large metal coffee can or another sturdy container.
Another idea is to make your time capsule out of a cigar-box type container and let the kids paper mache over top of it, sealing it shut. The kids can paint and decorate the paper mache box before burying it in a hole in the back yard.
To further protect your time capsule from decay, you can line the hole with wet cement before placing your capsule in.
Make a pact to dig it up in 10 years later or when your youngest child turns 18.
Mix ginger ale and pineapple juice for a simple but delicious new year’s punch. Serve it in champagne glasses. You can find plastic champagne glasses at a party supply store and hand paint the year on them.
Family Fun has a recipe for confetti cake that will put a sparkle on your New Year’s Eve party table.
Happy New Year noisemakers can be made out of a variety of things around the house. Put dried beans into an empty plastic soda bottle and shake them around at midnight.
Make a pair of crazy glasses out of pipe cleaners to ring in the new year. The middle two zeros in 2008 make perfect peepholes for eyes. Twist three or four pipe cleaners into a “2” “0” “0” “8” and two ear pieces, and connect all the pieces together. Add wiry tinsel ties for funky, festive glasses to ring in the new year.
Make some new year fireworks on paper. Dab a glob of white glue onto a piece of black construction paper. Blow through a drinking straw aimed at the glue to spread it around in the shape of a fireworks burst. Sprinkle with multi-colored glitter, shake off the excess and allow to dry.
