Good babysitters can be recommended by friends and relatives or found through community centers, schools, occasional care centers or babysitting agencies and websites.

While the main job of stay-at-home parents is to care for their kids, they need some time-out for themselves from time to time, hence the importance of having a few reliable babysitters.

Grandparents, relatives and friends with experience minding children often make good babysitters. However, it never hurts to find extra help, particularly if a babysitter is needed at a very short notice. Here are a few things to consider when looking for a babysitter.

Ask Friends or Relatives to Recommend Babysitters

Word of mouth is often pretty reliable. Ask friends and relatives to recommend a few babysitters that they are really happy with. Ask around the neighborhood too. The retired lady a few houses away may enjoy minding a child and earning some extra cash once in a while.

Advertise for Babysitting Services

Local community centers, libraries, churches and schools are great places to advertise for babysitting services. Put up the advertisement on notice boards of those places. Keep a look-out on notices providing babysitting services too.

Some high school and university students work part-time as babysitters to earn some pocket money. University students make great babysitters because they often have more flexible timetables. This means they may be able to help out during the day or whenever the regular babysitter is unavailable.

Contact an Occasional Care Center

In some countries like Australia, community organizations, non-profit organizations or local councils may run occasional care services. Occasional care supports families by providing flexible care for children from birth to school age. Unlike full-fledged child care centers, occasional care centers allow parents to leave their children there on a non-regular basis. This means stay-at-home parents who need to go shopping, attend important appointments or pursuing leisure activities can make good use of occasional care services when the need arises.

Babysitting Agencies and Websites

Babysitting agencies can be found through the Yellow Pages and the Internet. Websites such as Phone A Babysitter, CareForKids and Find A Babysitter (FAB) not only come with search engines to locate babysitters, they are also filled with resources and information related to child care.

All parents, including stay-at-home parents, will need a break from the daily routine of caring for their children. That’s why it’s important to have a few good babysitters on standby. Find babysitters by asking recommendations from friends and family. Parents can also try advertising for babysitting services, getting help from occasional care centers or searching through babysitting agencies and websites.
